Burney, David
— Chickasaw, also called David Calhoun Barney, was born about 1818, the son of
Simon and Peggy (Allen) Burney. He was patented 819 and 830 T14 R5E in
Chickasaw County
,
Mississippi
, in 1836 (1), and sold S3 T15 R5E in
Monroe
County
on December 3, 1035 (2). Mc still owned S19 and S30 on August 12, 1838 (3).
In September, 1840, he and the five members of his family, as well as 18
slaves, were scheduled to go west, but did not go (4). He remained in
Chickasaw
County
until December, 1843, when he, his family, and his mother headed west. They
took a circuitous route that carried them through
Shreveport
,
Louisiana
, where a son, Benjamin, was born On January 15, 1844 (5). Later in the year,
David filed a claim for emigration Census (6). The
1847 census lists him as half white, head of a household that consisted of one
male under 13, one male over 18, four females under 16, and two fema1es over 16.
He then owned 19 slaves.
In 1855 he lived in the Chickasaw District, his household
including Emily, Mary, Wesley,
Margaret
,
Frances
, Benjamin, Susan, and Rebecca. he was listed on the 1857-1860 annuity rolls,
was a delegate to:
Washington
in 1866, and died at Linn in 1870 (7). He was married twice, first to Lucy
James, who died in 1845. Their children were Susan D. (born 18363 married first
to John Duke, then on March 3, 1864, to William S. Burks; die at Paul’s
Valley, July 10, 1902) , Amanda (married Benjamin McLaughlin and died December
26, 1875), Rebecca (April, 1841—May 4, 1919; married James Jackson McAlester
in Tobusky County on August 22, 1872), and Benjamin Cooks (January 15,
1844—November 25, 1892). David then married Emily (Love) Roark (February 24,
1827 March 23, 1884), a daughter of Isaac Love. She and their ch1dren lived in
Pickens
County
in 1878. David and Emily were the parents of Mary C. (December 16, 1846—July
5, 1872; married Albert H. Gaines and Benjamin F. Overton), Wesley Browning
(April 5, 1849—April 21, 1912: married Mary Eliza Gaines and Clifford C.
Ponder), Margaret E. (died 1883; married A.H. Law), Frances Ellen (1856—June
28, 1876; married Laban L. Woods), Edwin Sehon (January 20, 1861—June 9, 1920;
married Ada Cross) , Nancy Jane (1863—October 4, 1898; married John William
Archerd Jr. on October 3, 1878), and Emily (1866—February, 1892: married
Benjamin J. Vaughn in 1882) (8).
