In our efforts to assist
researchers determine the origins of their ancestors we are providing a series
of maps from the 1896 survey of Indian Territory that would precede the Dawes
Allotment period.
These maps will provide a visual aid for the researcher when they extract the place of residence of their Dawes Enrollee ancestors.
The
map highlighted portion of the map to the left indicates the size and location
of the Cherokee Nation and indicates some of the major towns that existed
prior to statehood.
The areas that were surveyed by 1896 are indicated by the red rectangles.
