1896 Application Chickasaw "Citizen by blood"

The 1896 Applications for citizenship in the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations are a part of National Archives Record Group 75 and also known as the M1650 microfilm files.

These records can offer more information about individuals and family members that researchers should be aware of to determine if additional material can be located. There is a freedmen section to the applications but do not  overlook the possibility an ancestor could be located in the so called blood records. An index to these records exist and is in alphabetical order according to the "blood" or "freedmen categories."

Bettie Ligon was the lead litigant in what was described as a "one of the most gigantic pieces of litigation in the history of the Indian Territory." The suit involved the difference between an allotment of forty acres to "freedmen" as opposed to a three hundred and twenty acre allotment to individuals with Choctaw or Chickasaw "citizen by blood" designation by the Dawes Commissioners. It should also be noted the value of the land to the one thousand-five hundred, claimants involved with Equity Case 7071 was fifteen million dollars ($15,000,000.00) in 1907.

Indian Citizen April 18, 1907: P1, C1
