VOICES OF INDIAN TERRITORY©

voices of Indian territory© promises to bring to the public eye, the stories, the saga, and the voices of a population in what is now known as the state of Oklahoma, once called Freedmen. These were not ex-slaves from the Deep South , who moved into territorial Oklahoma . They were, in fact citizens of the Five Civilized Tribes. Their homes were in Indian Territory , and some had arrived in Indian Territory with the Five Nations. Some arrived as free people; many more arrived as slaves of those tribes. However, Indian Territory was their home.

They participated in every part of life in the New Territory, and like many from the nations, they were bilingual, they were bi-cultural and many were bi-racial. They lived and died on both sides of the law, some as lawmen, and some as outlaws. Many emerged as leaders within their tribes;

Our goal for this publication is to bring forth these forgotten voices of the Freedmen, and we hope, as they emerge, they are never to be forgotten again.
