Monroe Mission 1823-1827

After the services of the day, a session consisting of the Rev. Messrs. Blair and Wilson, assisted by Father Dickson, convened in the prayer hall. A black woman named Dinah, belonging to Mr. James Gunn applied to be received into the newly organized church...  

Rindah, a black woman belonging to Mr. Turner, was debarred from church privileges for improper conduct...

August 3rd, 1823. Dinah, having previously expressed a desire to have her children baptized, and having given us satisfactory evidence of her knowledge of this holy ordinance, presented her three children, Chloe, Willam and Lucy...

 May 15th, 1824. Abraham, a black man belonging to an Indian, and husband to the woman received at our last communion, applied for church privileges...

 Dec. 4th.1824 Mr. Barnard McLaughlin, Mrs. Tennessee Bynum, a native, and Esther, a black woman belonging to Mrs. Colbert...  

Dec. 19th.1824 The ordinance of baptism was administered to, ...Rindah's son Moses, and Esther's daughter Patsy.

 Dec. 26th. 1824 Dinah's infant daughter,, Patsy was baptized.

 April 2, 1825 ...Amy, a black woman belonging to the estate of James Gunn, deceased applied and was received...

 July 2, 1825 ...Chloe, a black woman belonging to an Indian, applied for privileges in the church...

 December 24, 1825 ...Three black persons, John, Daniel and Rebecca, were added to the communion of the church on examination...  

March 4, 1826 ...Affy, a black woman expressed a desire to be admitted to the coof the church...

 May 6, 1826 ...Three black persons, Agnes, Mary and Bob, having given satisfactory evidence of a work of grace upon their hearts, were admitted to the church privileges...

 May 21, 1826 Affy's child, Rallin was baptized.  

Sept. 30, 1826 Two black women, Sarah and Indah were admitted on examination...

April 1, 1827 David (Brainerd) son of Brother and Sister Butler, and Byington, son of Dinah and Abraham, were baptized.

 June 30, 1827...Nancy, a black woman, applied and was received...  

August 26, 1827 Sarah, a black woman, removed by death.  

Sept. 29, 1827...William Colbert, a native, and Primus, Ned, Billy, Jinney and Sally, black people...

October 6, 1827... Mrs Sarah A. Holmes was received by certificate from the session of the Second Presbyterian Church of Newark, N.J. Mrs Cheadle, a native woman, and four black people: Billy, Isam, Sally and Medlong (sic) were admitted on examination...  

October 7, 1827 Adjourned to meet on the second Saturday in December, next. Concluded with prayer. Mrs. Betsy Cheadle, Meadlong (sic), Jinney, William Colbert, Primus and Ned were baptized.  

November 11, 1827 The ordinance of baptism was administered to ..., also Jinney's three children, Fanney, Sunnun, Sally. Esther's (sic) infant son, Battels, and Sally's daughter, Teneesa (sic)  

December 8, 1827 ...Prince, a black man, applied for admission to the church...  

December 15, 1827 Session having met and opened with prayer, the following persons applied, viz: Mila, Minney, Bekky (sic), Snookey (sic) and Nelly...  

Dec. 22, 1827 Leah and Sophia admitted.  

December 25, 1827 Billy's son Randolph was baptized.
