Obituaries ~ Obsequies

Prior to my father passing away in 1999 he entrusted me with a stack of obituaries he collected over the years of friends and family with no purpose in mind. During several moves the obits became "misplaced" and at one time I was saddened with the prospect I may have lost or thrown them away in one of my relocations.

Recently I happened to be going through some storage containers I haven't looked through in over a year and was quite elated to rediscover these tiny bits of history. It was my intention to turn them over to some researcher or organization that preserved these records but after culling through them I found many that may be of use to Indian Territory Freedmen researchers.

Granted not all have a direct connection to Freedmen history but I suspect that is unimportant if one of them provides a researcher with valuable clues to rediscover their family's history.

As a service to aid genealogist who research Indian Territory Freedmen, I will begin the process of scanning all the pages my father collected and will begin posting the images.

If you have some obits that could be useful in this way contact the Choctaw-Chickasaw Freedmen Project at:

estelusti@sbcglobal

with obit in the subject line and we can arrange to have them become a part of this project.

As stated before, not all of the obits were a direct connection to the Freedmen, but because the community my father lived in had people from various states like Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana I'm sure those obits can be just as useful for other researchers and they too will be post appropriately.

We welcome your comments, and contributions.
