Thelma Jefferies

Thelma Jefferies I was born in Soper , Oklahoma Choctaw County. She is a graduate from Grant High School; Grant, Oklahoma.

“I’m interested in the study group for a couple of reasons. I would like to trace my family history. I think it is a disgrace that because, I’m an African American I can’t find out about my ancestors. I think this is why African Americans have so many problems because; they don’t know who they are.”

“I had two wonderful parents, they taught me how to work survive.  I resent the way that America looks at my culture. I just found out that African American were slaves to the Indians. I don’t even know my history, black history wasn’t taught in my school.”

Thelma echoes the sentiments of many who have ancestors that were enslaved in this country and she makes a wonderful point on our lack of knowing who we are. This is a vital role the Choctaw-Chickasaw Freedmen Project will have in educating others on their true and unique history in America , and among the Five Civilized Tribes.
