Indian Pioneer Papers

The Oklahoma Slave Interviews provide a first person account of the life experienced by our ancestors enslaved in Indian Territory among the so called Five Civilized Tribes.

The Interviews provide and preserve this unique history and when added to the interviews conducted by the Dawes Commission family history researchers are provided a rare glimpse into the lives of people who had been marginalized by historians that write about the history and institution of slavery among the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole Indians.

The Indian Pioneer Papers can be accessed at the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City . We respectfully ask those researchers that are engaged in this type of research to help us make the interviews of the Indian Territory Freedmen available to others. If you obtain other interviews that are in this category we ask that you forward a copy to us so it can be published on the site.
